As usual the club sent a sizeable contingent to the World Masters Regatta, this year in beautiful Bled in the foothills of the Alps in Slovenia. 28 Lea Rowers made the 1000 mile each way trip and Richard E and Mick R trailered our boats out there, along with some from Broxbourne and Poplar.
The Regatta was the largest Masters Regatta so far with over 4500 competitors and racing from Wednesday through to Sunday. There were crews from all over the world with sizeable representation from Australia, the USA, Japan, South America as well as big groups from closer to home, notably Russia and Germany.
Lea crews raced every day and we had crews racing in categories from Vet A (average age 27 or over) up to Vet I (average 75 and over – take a bow, Albert). Our oldest competitor was Mike Ashcroft (b1939 ) closely followed by Roy Vigus (b1940) who competed in Vet H fours.
We had a host of second places and wins for Valentina, Sally Lawrence and for the mens B 4- of Tom Wei, Emilio Hernadez, Richard Ellis and Ross MacDonald.
A brilliant few days of racing in very scenic surroundings and the weather played ball up until the last day when the heavens opened and everyone was thankful to be heading home invigorated for the coming season.
